FULL LENGTH PROGRAMS

Spoken Word/Body
*One Show Only!*
March 5th 10:00pm

Creation:  Martin Belanger
Performance:  Martin Belanger and Jean-Sebastien Durocher
Sound Design: Jean-Sebastien Durocher
Lighting Design:  Jean Jauvin
Artistic Advisor: Marie-Andree Gougeon
Recorded Voices:  Corinne Descombes, Delphine D., David Kilburn
Technical Director:  Armando Rubio Gomez

Martin Belanger’s work may be described as a hybrid form of dance where a cross-section of divergent elements is woven into the same fabric. Neither pure dance, nor theatre or “happening”, it is all of these things at once. If all stage art involving the spoken word requires the presence, by force of circumstance, of the actor or performer’s body, then Martin Belanger goes beyond the obvious in the sense that he gives a prominent place to the sheer presence of the body.

Spoken word/body, Belanger’s latest work, perhaps best represents this approach. Freely inspired by the American spoken word tradition, the body is not presented as a simple vehicle of communication, but first and foremost as a pure presence, even a place in its own right - of conflict, jubilation, tension and abatement.

Gradually movement and conceit became one in a fascinating and strangely touching hybrid ...
THE NEW YORK TIMES / New York

Belanger’s poetic, philosophical text on science fiction’s
post-human body or the influence of fear was itself an artistic
triumph ... To give away the marvellous epilogue would
be cruel. Suffice it to say, it is worth the price of admission.
THE GLOBE AND MAIL / Toronto

…absolutely fascinating, supple, sinuous
and light as air.

LA PRESSE / Montréal

Crash
Saturday, March 6th at 9:00pm
Sunday, March 7th at 2:00pm

Choreography and Performance: Tania Alvarado and Linda Turnbull

“Based on the idea of one person’s trash is another person’s treasure, “Crash” is an exploration of the relationships that we have with objects and the comfort that random objects can bring to people in general. Structured around different formations, piles or scattered pieces of junk, we present five events that include these objects in different settings. By developing themes around the element of chaos and control in a room full of clutter, we are asking the viewer to think about their intimate connection to objects and to space, and ultimately relate this connection to the body.”

This past summer Tania Alvarado and Linda Turnbull attended workshops, lectures and performances at ImPulsTanz in Vienna. Their partnership led to a creative residency in January 2010 at the Banff Centre for the Arts where they began the initial phase of their collaboration for a full-length choreography premiering later this year at the Expanse Movement Arts Festival. The choreographers acknowledge the kind support of DSW, the Banff Centre for the Arts, Bonnie Doon Community League, The Edmonton Real Estate Board and the Expanse Movement Arts Festival.

Mixed Programs

The Hurly Burly Excitement
Friday, March 5th at 8:00pm

The Dynamic Duo of Duff and Pref
Creation and Performance:  Joëlle Préfontaine and Samantha Duff
Hold on to your hats! Duff and Pref have just swooped in, and they are here to entertain. They’ll pluck out your nose hairs till the tears are just a’flowing, and they’ll serve you doubles and tell you that they’re singles until you’re falling off your chair with laughter.  And if that’s not enough, then they’ll sing you a song, while tappin’ along till the break of …whatever you’re in the market for.

Admiring…
Creation and Performance:  Kelsey Acton
Admiring… is inspired by an article by Mark Franco on Japanese dance/ performance artist Kazuo Ohno’s piece “Admiring La Argentina” and “Suiren”, respectively, his
interpretation/impersonation of Spanish dancer “La Argentina” and the visual art movement of Impressionism.  Admiring… explores the motifs of barriers, thresholds and the challenges of drawing inspiration from another medium such as writing or visual arts.

Billy Kidd
Billy Kidd brings to magic what most magicians don’t or can’t.....magic with a female twist, a chick doing tricks! One of the few female magicians in the world, watch as Billy reads minds, does amazing escapes and brings you into the world of astonishment!

The Greatest Novel Ever Wr…
Creator:  David MacInnis
Performers: Cole Humeny, Richard Lee , Cole Humeny.
Sound Design and Stage Management:  Lester Lee
Greatest Novel Ever Wr… , originally created in 2002, was a silent farce requiring three actors and a lot of doors on stage. This new version is an “overt mime” where the curtain is drawn and the rules are constantly broken. Ultimately, The Greatest Novel Ever Wr… is about three silly, grey-faced, psuedo-mimes who want nothing more than for their show to work and for you to enjoy it.
Meridian
Saturday, March 6th at 7:30pm

Creating a Body
Choreography and Performance: Kathy Metzger-Corriveau

Creating a Body has been inspired by the last 6 years of Ms. Metzger-Corriveau’s life as a professional dancer having children.  In 2008, she began the investigation of the process for this solo that drew on her internal body memory of creating a child and using elements of movement and emotional contrast to create an evolving self-portraiture.

Moving Through
Improvisers:  Stacey Murchison and James Gnam.

The beginning, the end, and all the stops in between.

An improvised journey created and performed by veteran Vancouver improvisers Stacy Murchison (EDAM) and James Gnam (Les Grands Ballets Canadiens de Montreal, Ballet British Columbia, joeINK and EDAM).
